MasterCraft Pro WaterSki Championships

Begin with Impressive Performances

Charleston, South Carolina (May 14, 2003) –The first day of qualifying at most water skiing events is usually uneventful, but not at the 2003 MasterCraft Pro WaterSki Championships presented by Chevy Trucks and GM Vortec engines. If the first day of qualifying is any indication, world records will be in jeopardy this weekend as many top performances were turned in on Friday at Trophy Lakes.

Brutal is a good word to describe the competition in men’s slalom qualifying as 40 professionals competed for just 16 spots in Saturday’s Semifinal rounds. Many of the performances turned in on Friday could have easily won other tournaments, but not at Trophy Lakes where conditions are so good a world record is begging to be broken.

Defending men’s slalom champion, Chris Parrish turned in the top performance of the day with 2 ½ buoys in his 41 pass. Parrish was one of five men to attempt the 41 pass, a group including Andy Mapple, Jamie Beauchesne, Terry Winter and William Asher. Asher from Great Britain is the one surprise of the group, competing in one of his first professional events in the United States.

The two local favorites Seth Stisher and Jeff Rodgers both of South Carolina, moved into the men’s semifinals. Rodgers, the co-world record holder qualified in the top 10 with a run of 5 @ 39 while Stisher qualified through the last chance qualifier, finishing second in the qualifier with a run of 4 @ 39.

In women’s slalom, Karen Truelove, the defending women’s champion was the class of the division as the only woman to compete the 38 pass. Truelove finished with 1 ¼ @ 39, far outdistancing the competition. Geraldine Jamin who finished second in the 2002 MasterCraft Pro, was second in Friday’s qualifier with a run of 4 @ 38. Third place in the qualifier was a three-way tie between Jill Knutson, Rhoni Barton and Sarah Gatty Saunt with 3 @ 38.

Now that qualifying is out of the way, the athletes have a way to earn money on Saturday in this unique event. Saturday’s Semifinal rounds are worth a total of $15,000 through the Indmar Performance Awards. Each discipline of men’s jump and slalom and women’s slalom will be paid a total of $5,000 each on Saturday. This comes in addition to the total prize purse for the top athletes who earn their way into Sunday’s Finals.
