MasterCraft Pro Waterski Championship

Presented by Chevy Trucks and GM Vortec Engines

World Records Look Sure to Fall This Weekend

Charleston, South Carolina (May 3, 2002) - With a huge prize purse on the line the MasterCraft Pro Waterski Championship presented by Chevy Trucks and GM Vortec engines is in full gear heading into the weekend with sizzling qualifying rounds on Friday at Trophy Lakes.

With nearly prefect conditions at Trophy Lakes behind the GM Vortec powered Indmar Marine engines in the MasterCraft ProStars, two standing water ski records in men's slalom and men's jump were in jeopardy Friday. By the end of the day, both of those records still held but not by much, and with the finals looming on Sunday along with a share of the $100,000 available for breaking the records in the finals, look for those old marks to be history.

Andy Mapple was the first skier of the day with his eyes on the prize. Mapple, the current men's slalom World Record holder with 1 @ 43 off, came within a fraction of at least equaling that mark. Mapple successfully completed the pass at 41 with lots of room to spare, but stopped short of the first buoy on the 43 pass, saving that coveted record for the finals Sunday.

''I've held the men's slalom record for some time,'' said Mapple, the current Pro Water Ski Tour Season Champion. ''Though I try not to think of those things and just go out to do my best, this weekend with the conditions at Trophy Lakes, it may fall.''

In men's jump it was Freddy Krueger who had the World Record in his sights. Krueger came within four feet of equaling the jump record with an effort of 229 feet. Krueger's effort was far and away the best of the day, outdistancing the field by 17 feet with the next best jump shared by Jason Seels and Jaret Llewellyn at 212 feet.

Jason Seels

''With the group of great jumpers assembled for this event, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone break the record and walk off with the prize,'' said Krueger. ''There are so many guys here who can take it. About 10 different jumpers have a shot at it this weekend.''

In women's slalom, Natalie Hamrick and Karen Truelove shared the top spot in qualifying with 3 @ 38 off. Hamrick is a South Carolina native who grew up skiing at Trophy Lakes. Truelove is hoping to make it two in a row after collecting a victory in Australia earlier this year.

Natalie Hamrick

''I've been so excited to ski here I haven't been able to sleep for a week,'' said Hamrick who is hoping to make the MasterCraft Pro her first-ever professional victory after four years on tour. ''You really know this is a big event. I was so excited in qualifying I couldn't feel my legs.''
